Why Data Doesn’t Save the Nice People

One of these anglers is going home with dinner.

An infographic came through my feed this week, shared by one of my more thoughtful followers. You’ve probably seen one like it. “The Facts About Migrants in Australia.” Beautiful design. Sydney Harbour Bridge across the top. Pink graduation cap. Treasury figures. Census data. Sources properly cited at the bottom.

I fact-checked it. It’s accurate. Migrants really do pay more in taxes than they take out. They really are younger, better educated, more likely to be working. The numbers stack up.

And it will change exactly nobody’s mind.

Because while the well-meaning people are making infographics, Pauline Hanson and Angus Taylor are telling a story. And a story beats a bar chart every single time.

Here’s the thing nobody wants to admit.

Taylor and Hanson aren’t stupid. They’ve got staffers. They’ve read the Treasury paper. They know the average skilled migrant contributes about $200,000 over their lifetime while the average Aussie-born citizen costs the budget $85,000.

They just don’t care. Because they’ve worked out something the infographic-makers haven’t: the fight isn’t actually about the numbers.

The fight is about who you are, who’s on your side, and who’s making your life harder. Housing costs are through the roof. You can’t get in to see a GP. The roads are choked. Your kid can’t afford a house in the suburb you grew up in. Something’s gone wrong, and somebody needs to cop the blame.

You don’t beat that with a pie chart. You really don’t.

Why data doesn’t work on social issues

This pattern shows up everywhere once you start looking for it.

Crime stats have been dropping for thirty years. Tough-on-crime campaigns still win. Why? Because the fight isn’t about the trendline. It’s about whether you feel safe walking to your car at night.

The climate science is settled. The politics isn’t. Why? Because the fight isn’t about radiative forcing. It’s about whose town shuts down when the coal mine closes.

Same with guns in America. Same with drugs. Same with nuclear power. When the data is clear but the politics is loud, it’s almost always because the data is answering a different question than the one people are actually asking.

The migration infographic answers: “Are migrants good for the budget?” Yes, they are.

But Betty in Blacktown isn’t asking that. Betty’s asking: “Why can’t my daughter afford a house? Why does the bus take an hour now? Who’s looking out for me?”

And if your answer is “well actually, according to Treasury modelling…” you’ve already lost her.

What 20 years of running a charity taught me about this

I spent two decades running Action for Agriculture. Australian agriculture had an image problem with young people. Kids thought farming was boring, dirty, going broke, finished.

 We made infographics. Plenty of them. Good ones. But we never led with them.

We led with people. Young farmers, sharp, funny, articulate twenty-somethings doing extraordinary things with technology, sustainability, animal welfare. We called them Young Farming Champions. We put them in front of school kids. We ran the Archibull Prize where kids made art about agriculture after meeting these young farmers and hearing their stories.

Then, once the kids were hooked, once they’d met Cassie or Sam and thought “hang on, this is actually interesting,” then we’d hand them the infographic. The GDP figures. The export numbers. The sustainability stats. The careers data.

And by that point, they actually read it. Because they’d already decided they cared.

That’s the bit the pro-migration crowd is getting wrong. They’re handing Betty the infographic on the first date. Before she’s even sat down. Before she knows why she should care. And then they’re surprised when she walks out.

So what should the pro-migration side actually do?

Same order of operations.

Lead with people. Not “migrants” as a category. Specific, named, photographed humans. The Filipino nurse who looked after your mum in palliative care. The Indian engineer who fixed your suburb’s water. The Sudanese kid in your daughter’s class who’s just been picked for the rep team.

Get Betty curious. Get her invested. Get her thinking “hang on, that’s not the story I’m being told.”

Then, once she’s hooked, bring out the Treasury numbers. The 56% with tertiary qualifications. The $200,000 lifetime contribution. The employment rates. By then she’ll read them, because she’ll already be on the journey.

And here’s the bit the nice people really struggle with. Acknowledge what the other side is getting right. Housing pressure is real. Infrastructure lag is real. Wage pressure in some industries is real. If your pro-migration message pretends none of that exists, you sound like you live on a different planet to Betty, and she’ll vote for whoever doesn’t.

And the hard truth. The people making these careful, accurate, well-sourced infographics aren’t wrong. They’ve just got the order wrong.

Hanson and Taylor lead with story. Threat, identity, who’s on your side. By the time anyone gets around to checking the numbers, the emotional work is done and the data bounces off.

The nice people lead with numbers. And the story never gets told at all.

If you care about social issues, migration, climate, reconciliation, whatever your patch is, make your infographics. Make them beautiful. Make them accurate. But understand they’re the second move, not the first.

Hook them with a human. Seal it with the data.

That’s the order. We had it right at Action4agriculture. The pro-migration crowd needs to figure it out before the next election.

Finding My Voice on as Lifelong Journey to Share My Values and Drive Change

I don’t hold a degree in journalism, and while I scored in the top 1% for English in the HSC, I’ve never considered that achievement a defining marker of my career. At best, it was proof that, for one brief moment, I could meet an examiner’s expectations. Oddly enough, instead of following that path, I chose a science-based degree at university. Now, as a person in their  sixties, I find myself reconnecting with the part of me that existed at 18, that young person who had a drive to express their values, communicate clearly, and—hopefully—contribute to meaningful change.

At this stage in life, I’ve traded in traditional credentials for something I value even more: a clear voice, a passion for justice, and a commitment to my community. I am not a journalist, but I have a desire to use whatever tools I can to amplify voices and perspectives often overshadowed or misunderstood. This journey has brought me back to writing, not as a career milestone but as a path to share thoughts and advocate for change.

In a way, my lack of a traditional journalism background feels like a strength. I’m not confined by rigid structures or prescribed formulas; instead, I can engage directly with issues that matter to me, particularly those around social justice, environmental advocacy, and community-building. Every article or post I create is an opportunity to speak authentically, reaching others who may feel the same pull toward positive change.

In essence, I consider myself a “values-based communicator.” This title resonates with my desire to express principles that matter, to bridge divides, and to build a more understanding world. It’s not about the credentials I lack; it’s about the passion and purpose I bring to my words. I hope that sharing these thoughts will inspire others who, like me, feel called to use their voice—even if they, too, don’t quite fit the traditional mould.

Beyond Success by Embracing the Role of Healers, Peacemakers, and Storytellers

In today’s world, the definition of success often revolves around wealth, status, and power. Yet, as the message on this wall poignantly states, what our planet desperately needs are more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of all kinds.

As I reflect on my journey and the work I’ve been privileged to be part of, it becomes increasingly clear that our true impact lies not in the titles we hold but in the difference we make in the lives of others. Through my efforts to support communities and schools, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of young people navigating the world with confidence, appreciating different perspectives, and taking meaningful action on issues that matter to them.

In a world rife with conflict and division, the role of a peacemaker is more crucial than ever. It’s about fostering dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect. Through initiatives that bring people together and encourage open communication, we can build a more harmonious society. This involves creating spaces where diverse voices can be heard and valued, promoting a culture of empathy and collaboration.

Our society needs healers – not just in the medical sense but in every facet of life. This includes emotional, psychological, and social healing. By supporting young people in schools to build their emotional intelligence and resilience, we lay the foundation for a more compassionate future. Initiatives that promote mental well-being and provide support for those in distress are essential in creating a caring and inclusive community.

Stories are powerful. They shape our understanding of the world, inspire action, and connect us to our shared humanity. Through writing opinion pieces for the local paper and blog posts on social justice issues, I aim to highlight the stories that matter, especially those that often go unheard. It’s about changing the narrative and reinforcing positive perceptions, particularly in sectors like agriculture. By sharing the successes and challenges of our community efforts, we can inspire others to join in and make a difference.

A shining example of this approach is the Young Environmental Champions program, which recently won the Banksia Award for Impact and Communication. This program has been instrumental in raising young people’s confidence in their ability to drive real change in their communities. By empowering them with the knowledge and skills to tackle environmental issues, we have seen these young champions take bold steps in advocacy, project implementation, and community engagement. Their success is a testament to the power of nurturing young leaders who are passionate about making a difference.

Finally, the idea of being lovers of all kinds – lovers of people, of nature, of truth – speaks to a profound truth. It’s a call to infuse our actions with empathy, compassion, and a deep commitment to justice. Supporting communities to work together, based on the success of my work with schools, underscores the importance of collective action and solidarity. From Undervalued to Empowered. Farmers and the Community Uniting for Recognition and Support

 

In a recent discussion, Sarah, a dedicated dairy farmer, shared her frustration about the lack of recognition and financial stability in the farming industry. Her sentiments resonate deeply with many other professions and groups who feel similarly undervalued.

I asked at marketing and communications expert to suggest ways we can shift the narrative from feeling undervalued to taking actionable steps towards empowerment and recognition.

Recognising the Common Struggles

Sarah’s frustration is not unique. Many groups share the experience of being underappreciated despite their crucial contributions. Among them are:

  • Teachers and Educators: Shaping future generations under constant budget constraints and low pay.
  • Healthcare Workers: Enduring long hours and high stress, especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Artists and Musicians: Struggling for financial stability and recognition in a society that often undervalues creative professions.

Policy and Support: Advocate for policy changes that provide better financial support, working conditions, and recognition.

While the feeling of being undervalued is real and justified, there are actionable steps that can lead to greater recognition and support. By uniting, advocating, and empowering ourselves and each other, we can shift the focus from feeling undervalued to becoming recognised and appreciated for the crucial roles we play in society.

Together, we can foster a society that values and supports all its members.

The Urgent Crusade when Advocacy Fuelled by Life-Changing Experiences

Navigating the world of community advocacy and leadership can be both incredibly rewarding and deeply challenging. As passionate advocates, many of us find ourselves driven by a relentless desire to make a difference, to push for change, and to ensure that our voices—and the voices of those we represent—are heard. However, this unwavering commitment can sometimes lead us to go one step too far, especially when faced with opposition that isn’t listening. If you’ve ever felt the frustration of trying to win the unwinnable battle or the compulsion to prove your point against all odds, know that you’re not alone.

For some, this drive is intensified by personal experiences that have heightened our sense of urgency. In my case, an almost successful attempt on my life has fuelled a deep-seated concern that I don’t have time to achieve all that I want to achieve.

    • Instead of trying to win over opponents single-handedly, build alliances with others who share your vision. Collective voices often carry more weight.

The Unseen Accomplices. Understanding the Motivations of Domestic Violence Enablers

 

This is a blog post I wish I didn’t feel necessary to write.

Enablers need to understand the impact of their actions (or inactions) and be equipped with resources and support to make a change.

Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that transcends cultural, economic, and social boundaries. While much attention is rightfully given to the perpetrators and victims, there is a third group that plays a critical role in the dynamics of domestic abuse — the enablers. These are the individuals who, knowingly or unknowingly, contribute to the perpetuation of abuse. Understanding their motivations and the personalities that commonly become enablers is crucial in the fight against domestic violence.

Motivations Behind Enabling Behaviour

  1. Denial and Minimisation: Some enablers refuse to acknowledge the severity of the situation. They may believe that the abuse is a one-time event or an anomaly, despite recurring patterns.
  2. Fear of Confrontation: Fear can paralyse enablers from taking action. They might fear retaliation from the abuser, disruption of family dynamics, or the unknown consequences of intervening.
  3. Dependency: Emotional or financial dependency on the abuser can motivate enablers to maintain the status quo. This dependency can cloud judgment and lead to rationalising the abuser’s actions.
  4. Desire to Protect the Abuser: Enablers often have a close relationship with the abuser and may want to protect them from legal consequences or social ostracism.
  5. Misguided Loyalty: Loyalty to the abuser, whether due to familial ties, friendship, or romantic attachment, can result in enabling behaviour.
  6. Normalisation of Violence: In some cases, enablers have grown up in environments where violence was normalised, leading them to not recognise domestic violence as unacceptable.
  7. Hope for Change: Enablers may cling to the hope that the abuser will change, often against all evidence to the contrary.

Personalities Prone to Enabling

  1. The Caretaker: Individuals who have a nurturing personality may find themselves in the role of an enabler, believing they can “fix” or “heal” the abuser.
  2. The Peacemaker: Those who prioritise harmony and are conflict-averse may enable abuse by avoiding confrontations and not addressing the issue directly.
  3. The Optimist: Ever-hopeful optimists might continually look for the good in the abuser, to the point of ignoring the harmful behaviours.
  4. The Authoritarian: People who uphold strict traditional values may believe in maintaining family structure at all costs, even if it means enabling domestic violence.
  5. The Uninformed: Lack of awareness about the dynamics of domestic violence can lead to enabling behaviour simply because the individual does not recognise the signs.

Breaking the Cycle

Addressing the issue of enablers is not about assigning blame but about recognising their crucial role in the ecosystem of domestic violence. Education and awareness are vital. Enablers need to understand the impact of their actions (or inactions) and be equipped with resources and support to make a change.

Intervention programs and support groups can help enablers realise the gravity of the situation and encourage them to take appropriate action. Professional help can also provide the tools to confront their own fears and dependencies, which may be at the root of their enabling behaviours.

Tackling domestic violence requires a comprehensive approach that includes understanding and intervening in the behaviour of enablers. By shining a light on this often-overlooked group, we can take another step toward breaking the cycle of abuse and fostering a society where violence in any form is not tolerated or enabled.

The Marriotts – a family of legends – courage personified 

As Australians across the country rally to #standwithMaz by tuning into ABCLandline today to watch Catherine Marriott on the Pardoo Station segment  I am reflecting on the  positives of Catherine’s bravery in taking a stance against inappropriate behaviour towards women by people in powerful positions.  It has highlighted the courage of women in the agriculture sector and unified the sector with a collaborative call to action from both men and women, organisations, business and the community.

I remain stunned anyone would question the timing of the complaint. As I said in a previous post I have no idea what I would do. In the first instance I would want to be 100% confident of my family support, support of friends and knowing my networks have my back. Catherine Marriott has all of those in spades.

Then I would think about self care. Like many others, I too have been bullied on Twitter. I have seen how tough it can be at a political level. I remember vividly walking into a national meeting in Melbourne of a NSW industry  group I was representing. The first thing that happened was been taken into a corner by one of the other women in the room who said I hope you wore your armour, women on committees in our industry in Victoria are only seen to be here to serve the tea and scones. She was right it was very unpleasant. I didn’t last long.

Quoting National Farmers Federation President Fiona Simson from this article Barnaby Joyce leak shocks rural women amid sexual harassment investigation it should be obvious to everyone why I believe people don’t just automatically walk into police stations

“I think some of it is not understanding what is acceptable and feeling maybe a little bit guilty about calling some of it out. But I also think there is a bit of fear around what the repercussions are going to be.”

“Am I going to be trolled if it’s on social media? Am I going to be outed in the workplace? Am I going to lose my job, am I going to be able to progress on the career path that I’m on?”

Catherine Marriott’s recent media statement reiterates this

“This complaint was made not only to address the incident against me — it was about speaking up against inappropriate behaviour by people in powerful positions,” she said.

“Suggestions to the contrary are hurtful, incorrect and the very reason why I hesitated to come forward at the time of the incident.

“Speculation on this issue by people who are unaware of the facts is impacting my right to a fair and due process. The additional stress of having to go through this publicly and with people’s judgement is the exact reason people don’t come forward.”

Self care has to be the number one priority.  Catherine’s bravery has provided an opportunity for our rural champions to come out in force saying to other courageous women we are here for you, we will support you and we will lobby to ensure that courageous women (and men) get the pastoral care they deserve as well as fair and due process

Leadership reflections. Be good to yourself. Life is short. Live it with joy.

International Womens Day (IDW) 2005 was a pivotal point in my life journey. When I got the call to tell me I was the inaugural Kiama IWD Electorate Women of the Year, I was thrilled, I was flabbergasted, and I had a huge dose of imposter syndrome. It was the imposter syndrome that weighed heavily so I set the bar high for myself and was determined to live up to award and so the journey began.

This is a post for everyone out there fighting the good fight, spending a lot of time questioning themselves, feeling a bit (very) jaded, and keen to get their mojo back.

In celebration of International Women’s Day (8th March 2018), I wanted to take the time out to thank some women who have made an impact on me during my Farm Table journey so far.

 Some know me, some do not, but they have all inspired me and given me the confidence to develop, grow and take risks running my own business.

These women are running businesses and building solutions to issues and challenges we share across rural and agricultural industries. Starting up a business can be lonely and scary, particularly when in a rural area. But, with a network of like-minded and supportive women across the country, you are never truly alone.

Thank you, from me, and from all that you inspire.

MMMh the ‘ultimate leader’. What is a leader. One thing I know for sure is what Airlie and her support team have created with Farm Table is nothing short of phenomenal and there is no way in the world I could have pulled it off. Super kudos to them

If leadership is creating a movement and being part of that movement. I can wear that hat. My style is not one that everyone is comfortable with and I have spent the last five years questioning it myself.

I’ve been called a leader for taking initiative, getting things done and standing my ground on big issues. My journey has taught me that results are not everything and leadership is not a solo activity.  It’s something that you do with people, not despite people. To be a successful leader we also need to work on how we engage to get those results. One of the things I’ve been working on is developing my style to build stronger relationships because relationships are everything. We always need to be thinking about how we can improve, how can we learn, and to take every leadership opportunity as a personal growth experience as well as a product delivery outcome.

Last year I signed up for several “leadership” courses. I engaged a leadership coach. I identified all the things I wanted to ‘improve’ about myself and poured my heart and soul into it. Let me tell you – you can have too much self-awareness. What my journey to be a  ‘better version of myself’  has reinforced is the importance of deep, genuine friendships, seeking help and surrounding yourself with people who bring joy into your life.

The most insightful advice I can give every-one out there (and we are all leaders) is be kind to yourself. As Steve Jobs so famously said “if you want to be liked, sell ice-cream”. People can pick and choose whether they want to be part of your movement or not.

And the tall poppy syndrome. Don’t beat yourself up. If some-one singles you out for an award or gives you an accolade, wear it with pride. Sure, there will be plenty of people they could have given it too, but they picked you. It’s what you do with the award, it’s how you leverage it on behalf of your cause that counts.

As Airlie identified there is no shortage of women in agriculture doing diverse and exciting things. There is no shortage of people in agriculture doing exciting things. There is no shortage of people in all our communities doing exciting things. If you want to start a movement or join a movement, find the one that brings joy into your life.

Thanks Airlie.  I look forward to following your journey.  I havent had the opportunity to work with you but my gut tells me you have an inclusive leadership style I have always aspired too

Speaking of Leadership Courses. The one that has left the most indelible impression on me is Leading Transformational Change. Its a live-in course at the Melbourne Business School. The course is transformational but its the people I met at the course who helped me put perspective to my life journey. They helped me celebrate the person I am. The good, the bits others think I should change and the bits I would like to change.  What others think no longer occupies large parts of my head space and the bits I would like to change help me appreciate others with those characteristics and aspire to surround myself with them.

Be good to  yourself. Life is short. Live it with joy

Is Farmers for Climate Action the new leadership model for Agriculture?

As a founding member and ambassador for Farmers for Climate Action I find the  movement and its farmers awe-inspiring for so many reasons and ask is it the new model for leadership in agriculture?

It is a movement set up by farmers for farmers and its kicking goal after goal showing that Australian Farmers

  • Are taking climate action
  • Can work effectively with diverse groups including groups farmers traditionally felt were antagonists
  • Can effectively form a powerful lobby movement
  • Have powerful philanthropic support
  • Have community support
  • Can attract outside industry support funding partners
  • Can effectively develop and deliver NGO campaigns in a style like Getup
  • Can effectively crowdfund for projects that match their values
  • Can get the politicians to sit up and listen and converse and act
  • can work collaboratively and collectively together

WHAT DO WE STAND FOR

 Farmers for Climate Action is an inclusive movement driven by farmers, for farmers calling for immediate action on climate change and supporting on-farm adaptation and mitigation to ensure a positive future for generations of Australian farmers.

We are committed to working with farmers from all across Australia to communicate issues relating to climate change.

We are supporting farmers to be part of the solution to climate change through climate-smart farming practices. We recognize that many farmers are already leading the way.

We are actively advocating for more targeted research, development, extension and adoption to support farmers in successfully adapting to changing climatic conditions.

We are strongly advocating for immediate action on climate change at local, state and federal levels and working with our communities to ensure farmers have a strong voice on climate change.

We are calling on a rapid transformation of Australia’s energy system away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy in a way that maximizes benefits to farmers and regional communities.

We recognise that climate solutions can provide huge benefits for regional Australia, helping revitalise our communities.
